TGIM! That’s right, Monday! My favorite day of the week. The day the rest of the world goes back to work for a 5 day stretch while I get a few off. #mondayfunday is when I can hit pretty much any restaurant I want and score an awesome drink/ food special without any wait. In fact, we hit Legoland with the kids a few months back on a Monday and it looked like it might rain so the place was desolate. I’ve never seen an amusement park in California let people stay on rides and go a second round before?! [there was nobody in line]. It’s a glorious day when that happens.. but it does, and therefore Monday has easily become my favorite day of the week!
Moving on! We just wrapped another hyped weekend photographing weddings in Southern California! And like any self employed person, I’m a slave to the grind and wanted to blog this wedding on my day off while sipping a cocktail by the pool. Yeah, I’m technically drinking on the job in my board shorts [dont tell my wife] but it makes this all the more enjoyable :))) Don’t judge me!
As I polish off this glass I wanna toss up these suhhhweeet callaway winery wedding photos. And like this cocktail in the sun these photos make me smile, not only that, they make me happy. This wedding [hands down] had the craziest Hora I’ve ever experienced. I know cause I was right in the middle of it. I’m a punk rock kid and have never shy’d away from a good pit. Tonight!? Tonight’s Hora was essentially a pit worthy of any dive bar thrash/punk show I’ve ever been to. Plus, there was a band backing it up, they unleashed and the crowd responded. Sweat was dripping off the ceiling and the air was electric. I’ll drop in the pics now and drop in commentary along the way if compelled.
Now I know what you are thinking… “Wait, did he just drop the party shots first!? thats backwards and not the format that every other wedding blog I’ve already visited today does it…” gasp! “what kind of wedding blog is this?” ;) Yeah, yeah.. I know. I just couldn’t help myself. It felt wrong talking about the crazy Hora and then go along dropping into a bunch shots of the Samantha getting ready. So just roll with it.. I’m taking the Tarantino approach to this one. Take it as it comes, it’ll go in bits and make sense in the end!
Samantha and Tyler, like most of our awesome couples, went with a first look. Seeing one another before the ceremony let us better use time to take ALL of their photos before guests arrived and things got going. That way after the ceremony they were able to enjoy some time alone together and chill out with their friends and family.. instead of being pulled around spot to spot. We took advantage of this undisturbed time and took photos of them, the bridal party and even knocked out ALL the family photos!
Oh, and before I drop the next batch of photos I wanna say that I LOVE it when our bride that’s got a sense of humor. Keep in mind I’ve been hanging with the guys all morning and the vibe is chill, beers in hand kind of thing. So I never really know what to expect here with our bride. Sometimes she’s all nerves on the brink of tears and it gets really intense… or sometimes this happens. Sooooooo good!
I LOVE it. I’m smiling!! are you?!? you should be :-) Ok, so after that it was time to call in the crew and have some fun taking bridal party pics. These guys were having a good time and itchin to go so I figured it was better to keep the energy going and roll into these pics. We mixed it up a few ways and then let them all go on their way so that we’d have a bit of alone time with our couple [once they were primed up and ready]
Ketubah signings are awesome! I really dig the closeness it brings. Willingly forcing everyone into a room where they laugh and sing with each other is the best. Of course before signing the Ketubah, Tyler makes sure that there hasn’t been a bait and switch and that its still Samantha under the veil ;-) cause once you sign that paper, its a done deal. You never can be too safe. Fortunately, she checks out. The deal is a go and they proceed sign on the line.
Ok, so officially at this point they are married. Technically they can pack up and go home cause the rest is for show…. and its going to be an awesome show. Saddle up cause there is sooooo much more to do! BUT before we go on our way to the traditional ceremony, lets see how this day all got started. Cause there was a lot of prep work involved in getting here up to this point. All these girls started the process many hours ago and as most brides know, their day starts looooooong before the guys even wake up and roll out of bed. lol Truth. That’s just the way it is. Here’s how Samantha and Tyler’s wedding at Callaway Winery begins:
The wind was blowing while a guitarist played to the guests as they chose a place to witness the ceremony. The Chuppah was adorned in a vibrant floral sash. The guys met in a tight circle like a football team making a game plan for moments that lay ahead. They might have been simply saying a prayer or perhaps getting hyped up. I couldnt hear and kept a distance photographing with my zoom so as not to interrupt. I took my place as the music changed and Samantha made her walk to her man.
And thats how it ended, just like that. Actually I’m sure there were plenty more moments after the shot above but that above is how I like to remember it peaking out. I have to say LIVE MUSIC is where its at. Sorry to all my DJ friends, I mean you are great and all but there is just something about the energy a live band brings that cannot be matched by pre recorded amplified sound. When a band comes on and energy fills the room it becomes infectious. I’ve witnessed it time and time again and I know ALL about it, first hand.
One of the best examples I have was actually at our wedding. Jess and I had both a DJ and live music. The DJ set during the first half of the night was horrible. No playlist he fumbled his way through the night. Fortunately I had made it a point to track down our favorite band [ The Growlers ] and somehow convinced them to come out and play at our wedding. The second half of the night they rolled in and the results were much like this… in effect it saved our night. Going one step further I can safely say I’ve never seen LIVE music ruin a wedding, but I have seen DJ’s fall flat and struggle. A variety band like Karizma is just what this crew needed to keep going all night long… which they did. A solid 3 hour set no breaks that was laid down and played the perfect pairing to this wedding. As you can see by the amount of sweat in the dance shots !! Everyone was moving !!
I almost forgot to mention, we had our Temecula Photobooth out as well and the rotation between bar / dance floor + photobooth was a perfect pairing.
Samantha and Tyler, you, your family + friends were so much fun to hang with and we are so thankful to have been given the chance to be your side kicks for the day do our thing. No doubt you two had the best night ever and we look forward to sharing these pics with you and everyone to relive the night that they wont soon forget.
